Happy New Year!

And thank you to all of our members and supporters for their hard work, enthusiasm and creative ideas during the general election campaign. We were one of the five most successful Lib Dem teams in the East Midlands.

Although our overall national result in terms of MPs was very disappointing, we did increase our share of the vote and gain many new members. Unfortunately, as long as we have a First Past the Post System, many voters will feel that a general election is a two-horse race for PM. Nevertheless, the Liberal Democrat Board has commissioned a review into the election and members will be asked to contribute.

Locally we did much better, especially in many parts of Rutland, but we are also making inroads into Melton and have an established group in the northern and eastern parts of Harborough district. Our campaign was energetically and enthusiastically supported by so many people, including executive members, councillors, registered members and supporters, members of the public, and Lib Dems and European Movement supporters from Leicester.

We had volunteers to deliver leaflets, host events, make donations, design leaflets, take photographs, make videos, organise an AdVan, put up poster-boards, help with social media and engage in many other activities. Hopefully we can build on this energy and support to increase our councillor numbers when the time comes. It would be particularly good to have Melton councillors now we have a new team in the area. Please let us know if you would like to be involved.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats will be electing a new leader. For the moment Ed Davey and Mark Pack (our new president) are joint leaders. Nominations will open on the 11th of May and close on the 28th of May. Perhaps you would like to ensure you are eligible to vote.

Brexit will be taking place at the end of the month but there is still much work to be done. Over the last two days Liberal Democrat peers have helped to inflict defeats on the Conservative Government in the House of Lords, including to protect child refugees (although the Lords will be ignored).

The European Movement and other pro-EU organisations will also be working hard to hold the government to account and to keep the public informed of negotiations during the 'transition period'.

Thanks again. I really enjoyed working with you all and hope to meet you at upcoming social events.
