Serious allegations against Vote Leave campaign threaten the foundations of our democracy

March 31, 2018 9:27 AM

EdDaveyFrom Ed Davey:

I've written to the Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, Yvette Cooper, calling on her to investigate the alleged illegal activity of Vote Leave.

I believe that the Home Affairs Select Committee should immediately launch an enquiry into the serious accusations against the Vote Leave campaign, including deliberate overspending, illegal coordination and a significant cover-up of their relationship with the smaller campaign group BeLeave.

The allegations against Cambridge Analytica, and the legal opinions of Helen Mountfield QC and Clare Montgomery, only strengthen the case for an urgent investigation.

If true, these allegations call into question the very foundations of our democracy, and I have no doubt Yvette will agree with me that full disclosure must be given to Parliament and the British public on this extremely serious matter.

Electoral Misconduct in the European Referendum

I am writing to you in your position as Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, to urge you to immediately launch an enquiry into the alleged activity of named campaign groups during the 2016 referendum.

As you will have seen, there are serious accusations levelled at the official Vote Leave campaign related to deliberate overspending, illegal coordination and a significant cover-up of their relationship with the smaller campaign group BeLeave. Furthermore, following the revelations last week about the dubious activities of the company Cambridge Analytica, there are also allegations of their indirect involvement with Vote Leave and direct involvement with yet another campaign group, Leave.EU.

The legal opinions expressed by Helen Mountfield QC and Clare Montgomery QC at a press conference yesterday only strengthen the need for a rapid investigation.
If true, these allegations call into question the very foundations of our democracy, and I have no doubt you will agree with me that full disclosure must be given to Parliament and the British public on this extremely serious matter.

Your committee is well placed to conduct the scale of investigation needed to uncover the facts behind these claims, and I urge you to deploy the committee's expertise to this matter as soon as possible.
I look forward to your quick reply.

Yours sincerely,

Rt Hon Sir Ed Davey MP
Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Home Affairs
