Lib Dems know their facts

May 28, 2017 5:59 PM

The fact checkers agree that the Lib Dem's manifesto tells the truth.

1. "Nearly two-thirds of NHS trusts ended the last financial year in deficit"

The Lib Dems would create an immediate 1p rise on the basic, higher and additional rates of Income Tax to raise £6 billion additional revenue which would be ringfenced to be spent only on NHS and social care services.

2. "The Conservatives want to take us back 50 years, to an outdated system of grammar schools and secondary moderns, ignoring all the research and expert advice that show it will damage the life chances of so many children."

The Lib Dems would oppose new grammar schools - giving local authorities proper control over admissions and new schools.

3. "House prices are high across the country - even where houses are available to buy, they are often unaffordable for first-time buyers. In many areas, the rental market has also become unaffordable."

The Lib Dems would help people who cannot afford a deposit by introducing a new Rent to Own model where rent payments give tenants an increasing stake in the property, owning it outright after 30 years.

4. "Air pollution in the UK is a killer. It contributes to 40,000 premature deaths a year and costs the NHS £15 billion."

The Lib Dems would introduce an Air Quality Plan to reduce air pollution, and generate jobs and exports by supporting green industries that manufacture electric and low-emission vehicles.
