Rutland Lib Dem visits Ukraine with European Movement

March 14, 2014 9:47 AM

EMI delegation to KyivCarol Weaver, an executive member of Rutland and Melton Liberal Democrats, visited Ukraine from 6 to 8 March with a non-partisan European Movement International delegation in order to establish the European Movement in Ukraine. The delegation met with EU Ambassador Tombinski and other ambassadors, politicians and business groups before meeting with civil society groups including Liberal International and ALDE members. There was much enthusiasm for the new EM Ukraine and the need for it to be nationwide in order for it to bring the people together.

The hotel that the group stayed in was within the Maidan barricades. There was much evidence of the recent clashes but all was peaceful and one delegate was told very kindly that smoking in the street was not permitted.

Dr Carol Weaver is the author of The Politics of the Black Sea Region (Ashgate Publishing, 2013) and is now writing a new article on the Ukraine crisis for a new Lib Dem Think Tank called Liberal Europe.
