Julie Smith, Carol Weaver, Ambassador Gurbanov, William Wallace

Rutland Lib Dem Carol Weaver organised and chaired a Liberal Democrat European Group (LDEG) fringe event at conference on the "EU and Conflict Resolution" with speakers HE the Ambassador of Azerbaijan; Lord William Wallace, foreign affairs spokesman in the House of Lords; and Dr Julie Smith, chair of the Lib Dem security working group. The Ambassador discussed EU-Azerbaijani relations in general and his speech can be read in full on the LDEG website (www.ldeg.org). Dr Smith informed the meeting about the party's policy on conflict resolution and Lord Wallace talked about the implications of recent events in Georgia.

Grahame Hudson, Rutland and Melton PPC, attended the event and had lunch with the Ambassador.

The event was well attended and many questions were asked by participants. The answers were all interesting and extremely well informed leaving Lib Dems with many issues to consider.
