At an executive meeting on the 6th February a Selection Committee was appointed to begin the process of choosing a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the next General Election. The position will be advertised to Liberal Democrats then, once the Selection Committee has short-listed several candidates, hustings will take place and all Lib Dems in the constituency (comprising Rutland, Melton and North East Harborough districts) will receive ballot forms.
The candidate will be selected using the STV (single transferable vote) system of PR (proportional representation). This means that voters will be asked to rank candidates in order of preference on their ballot forms. The Lib Dems also support electoral change and would like to see PR used for Westminster elections as it now is for European and most other elections. A recent government report concluded
· "One of the main benefits of PR, and in particular STV, is that voters have a greater degree of choice in elections and a greater chance of their vote counting in terms of who gets elected."
· "On the criteria of social representation, the newly introduced voting systems have improved the situation of women"
· "We do not find a difference between PR systems and FPTP in terms of delivering stable and effective government"
The Selection Committee includes Peter Beanland (chair), Les Moverley (vice chair of Rutland & Melton Liberal Democrats), Ruth Archer (former Rutland councillor) and Peter Golden (councillor for Normanton).
