Professor John Twidell (environmental spokesperson, Rutland and Melton Constituency Liberal Democrats) wrote to the Rutland Mercury last week in response to a previous letter they had published. He says that the writer of the previous letter sought to debunk anthropogenic (mankind-induced) Climate Change. By doing this he rejected the considered and published opinions of (a) thousands of international scientists co-operating with the UN International Panel on Climate Change (e.g. see their refereed publications by Cambridge University Press), (b) the joint statements of national academies (including the UK Royal Society), (c) the Nobel Prize panel and advisers, (c) the main UK political parties and (d) many other authoritative bodies. Prof Twidell says that Al Gore's film seeks to present the scientific results to general audiences and in doing so he uses straightforward language. It's true that a single UK judge has measured his language against the scientific facts (with which the judge did not disagree) and advised caution on some simplified phrases. For John, there are no regrets in taking personal action to mitigate the effects of fossil-fuel emissions (CO2 etc). We should all use renewable energy, insulate homes, walk, eat local food, train not plane, and, above all, encourage each other in sustainable living.
