Earlier this week I challenged the new Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, to publish the full costings of the ID card project. Shockingly, the government is currently spending hundreds of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money to keep the full costings secret. Gordon Brown took the unprecedented decision to go to the High Court to block a ruling by the Information Commissioner that the Government's own cost and feasibility estimates (the so called Gateway Reviews) should be published in full.
The original request that they should be made public was made by the Liberal Democrats. Sadly the new Home Secretary simply continued to stonewall over the true costs.
Gordon Brown promised a new kind of politics. He says he wants to restore trust in Government. But actions speak louder than words - he
should show he is serious by being open and transparent about the costs of the ID card project. If he continues to drag his feet, the public will rightly start to think that very little has really changed.
