A new profile is added to the national DNA database every minute of every day. I uncovered this truth about the speed at which our database - already the largest in the world - is growing in Parliament last week. While we all acknowledge that DNA is a vital tool in the fight against crime, such a massive database must be subjected to proper scrutiny - especially when it contains details of nearly 150,000 people who were never charged, let alone convicted of an offence.
Full details of the question and answer can be found here:
We also discovered that over 100 children under the age of 10 have profiles
stored - as well as a surprising number of people over the age of 80. Read more here: http://tinyurl.com/2a5laa
The Liberal Democrats will continue to make the case that only the DNA of those found guilty of committing a crime should be permanently retained on the database, and we will continue to campaign vigorously on this issue both inside and outside Parliament.
Best Wishes,
Nick Clegg MP
Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary
