I am writing to all members of the Rutland and Melton Liberal Democrats to give you a report on the year so far and to mention some forthcoming events.
The local elections were rather disappointing. We fielded no candidates in Melton Borough and only three in Rutland and Melton. Peter Golden and Mark Oxley were re-elected. Sadly, Cedric Phillips was not. Ruth Archer, our other previous councillor, retired after ten years service. Our thanks go to her for all her hard work. In Thurnby and Houghton, Amanda Burrell, Simon Galton and Janice Tooley were all re-elected. Maurice Galton, Joanna Hamilton-Coldough and Mathew Worsnop, represented the Liberal Democrats in Tilton Ward, Nevill Ward and Billesdon Ward but were not elected. Our thanks go to them all.
Our social and fund raising events have been very successful. We should be very happy to see even more of you, particularly anyone who has not been able to come along so far. The supper at Slipcotes Bistro in Whissendine was an excellent evening attended by twenty-seven. This replaced our annual springtime event in Melton at the now (sadly closed) English's Bistro. We had very good support for the Exton Street Market and raised £350 in spite of the dreadful weather on spring bank holiday Monday. The running buffet lunch in Fay Howison's kitchen kept our spirits up. Thanks to Dan as ever for assembling an amazing collection of miscellaneous timber on which to display our wares. A good time was had at the Treasure Hunt in Oakham in June. Many thanks to Les and Polly Moverley for a magnificent tea.
Coming up shortly is the Family Lunch at John and Mary Twidell's in Horninghold. They are very keen on being green both personally and professionally. Their garden with vegetables, chickens and wind generator and house with solar panels is an education in itself. They also have a croquet lawn and tree house. (July 8th 12:30 pm in Horninghold 01858 555204). The Barbecue at 11 The Dell on September 2nd is from12:30 pm onward. Both Jacqueline and myself are keen gardeners and hope you and the sun can come ( 01572 723786). Please contact John or myself for any other details. The Quiz in Exton on 5th October is a very lively event (teams of 4) and also good value with supper included. See our website www.rutlandlibdems.org.uk for more details.
Finally we would welcome suggestions as to how to reform branches in the Melton and Harborough parts of the constituency. With such a large geographic spread, including Bottesford - on a level with Nottingham, Pickworth - a small village just north of Stamford, Caldecott - just north of Corby and Scraptoft - just east of Leicester, in our constituency we need a more broadly based organisation than at present.
My best wishes to you all, hoping to meet some new faces soon.
Yours sincerely
Peter Beanland
