Spring Conference Report

March 18, 2007 11:39 AM

Ming Campbell addressing the spring conference in HarrogateSeveral local members attended the Spring conference at Harrogate where there was an abundance of training and fringe meetings to attend as well as the main debates. The latter included Trident Renewal, Sustainable Housing, Green and Prosperous Communities, Cutting Crime in the Community, Saving Britain's Waterways and Water and Development. (The Lib Dems are strongly in favour of clean water projects in Africa).

The most controversial and heated debate was on renewing Trident. Perhaps it was only Sir Ming's rallying speech that saved the day for the motion which stated that we should delay making a definite decision about renewal at this time. (Many Lib Dems wanted unilateral disarmament.) Michael Moore MP, shadow defence, called for Europe to play a stronger role in the world and our emergency motion on Iran strongly opposed any military attack.

The conference ended with an excellent speech from our leader who outlined five tests for Gordon Brown.

Training events attended by local members included campaigning for local elections whilst fringe events included Europe at 50 with Nick Clegg.
