Bill Newton Dunn, MEP for the East Midlands, was the main speaker at our successful public meeting this year. The theme was the European Union and there was a lively discussion on topics such as climate change and cross-border crime. Bill has recently had a great success in encouraging the European Parliament to vote for a formal study on the need for a federal police force for Europe.
Other speakers were Professor John Twidell, talking about what the EU is doing to encourage clean energy, and Carol Weaver (10 Things you might not know about the EU).
Grahame Hudson, our 2005 PPC chaired the event and Peter Beanland, chair of Rutland & Melton Liberal Democrats, was our host.
The well attended event was held on 2nd November at Oakham Congregational Church followed by a delicious supper at The Wheatsheaf.
Bill has invited members to visit Brussels. This can be done by organising a group visit locally or via the Liberal Democrat European Group (www.ldeg.org)
