Huge Swing to LibDems at Bromley By-election

June 30, 2006 6:13 AM

The LibDems forced a recount at "safe" Tory seat of Bromley. Chris Rennard had this to say -

I have just come back from the count in Bromley, where Ben Abbotts and the team have scored a fantastic result.

In what was the 17th safest Tory seat in the whole country, the Conservatives have only clung on after a recount.

In fact, it is the worst by-election result for the Conservatives in a seat they held since Wirral South in the depths of John Major's unpopularity.

The story isn't much better for Labour either. They sunk to fourth place, losing two-thirds of their votes. It is the first time the party in government has finished fourth in an English by-election since Liverpool Walton, way back in 1991.

We can all be tremendously proud of Ben's result - and very grateful to the thousands of people who came and helped his campaign. Thank you.

Thanks too to our candidates Amy Kitcher and Steve Bard and their team in Blaenau Gwent, who increased our vote in the by-elections there too.
