Large numbers of people attending adult education classes face steep rises in charges in September. The increases are due to a switch in government funding towards younger people who failed at school and away from those who already have qualifications.
Colleges have already announced the closure of classes. The changes will not just affect those on higher incomes.
The new arrangements provide free tuition for those who left school without 5 or more GCSE's Grade A to C but only on full time courses. The government will also fund basic courses in Maths and English and vocational courses where there are skill shortages.
The Learning and Skills Development Agency in a report out today states that " Individual learners now have to shoulder a larger share of the costs of learning as the state's contribution has fallen."
Adult Education Classes have benefited people socially, economically and intellectually and it is expected that numbers of classes, enrolments and learners will fall in response to the rises.
