The Liberal Democrats support global fair trade and the European Union (although we believe that reform of the CAP is essential). Nevertheless we have supported localism for longer than the other parties. The local Lib Dems are currently concerned about what is being termed "food security".
For example, many dairy farms are going out of business and so much more of our food is being imported than is necessary. We feel that this could have a negative impact on health, rural areas and climate change, as well as our farmers.
We also have concerns about large supermarkets and the effects they have on suppliers as well as small businesses. With regard to the OFT's referral of the UK grocery market to the Competition Commission Chris Huhne MP has said: "This belated but welcome move must ensure a halt in the loss of small suppliers and loss of choice in communities caused by growing supermarket power. It's clear we now need a legally binding code to ensure all supermarkets do not exploit farmers and consumers."
