Charles writes to say he has been deeply touched by the thousands of people who have sent kind and supportive thoughts following his resignation.

He believes that as a party we must stay true to our principles and not lose sight of the broader concerns of the country as a whole.

He remains positively determined to maintain active participation in public life.
