Concern is being expressed with regard to the proposed extended use of Rutland Water.
The following letter will be sent to the Rutland Times and Rutland Mercury .
"The local Liberal Democrat Committee are concerned about the proposals to extend the use of Rutland Water in relation to the future development of thousands of new homes to the south east of Rutland. We believe the key question is the long term collection and use of water, since the criteria are clear for this. A separation should be made between (1) potable water for drinking, cooking and hygienic washing, and (2) grey water for gardens, car washing, toilet flushing etc. The grey water should be mostly rainwater collected from roofs, but augmented by waste potable water. The potable water would be as now from the water utilities. In this way, the potable water from Rutland Water would not be wasted needlessly and present supply would be more than sufficient. The challenge is therefore for grey water systems to become mandatory in the planning process. We are aware of the relatively large underground storage tanks that would be needed at each property, but their size, safety requirements and ancillary equipment would be similar to septic tanks, which is known practice. Purified water is expensive, so substituting grey water for non-potable use would be economic. The problems of Rutland Water therefore depend on the building regulations, which urgently need revision." - Prof. John Twidell
